EXTRA CURRICULAR

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS and ACTIVITIES

Encouraging children to pursue a variety of hobbies is often where they discover life-long interests, highlight previously unrecognised skills and strengths, build confidence and develop self-belief. It is also a wonderful way of having fun with their friends! Repton Prep is brimming with extra things to do and try both indoors and out, on-site and off.

The Independent Schools Inspectorate praised the range and popularity of our after-school activity programme. The activity list speaks for itself in terms of breadth and quality and includes sailing, gardening, chemistry club, street dance, outdoor cooking, fencing and jewellery making.

Activities range from the physical, cerebral, reflective, relaxing, creative and artistic, with specialist clubs put on for Prep and Pre-Prep age groups. Repton Prep firmly believes that adventurous experiences add significantly to a child’s school life, providing challenges and developing organisational and teamwork skills.

The activities that are available often reflect staff interests and enthusiasm, but pupils have a voice too and a number of activities have been set up at their request.

Most activities are included within the school fees apart from a number that require specialist teachers brought in from outside the school.

PREP WORK

Pupils can do their prep (or homework) at home or school. If they opt to do it at school then this takes place from 4pm – 5pm for years 5 and 6 in the Dining Hall and then from 5pm – 6pm for years 7 and 8. Teachers and tutors are on hand but pupils are encouraged to work independently to demonstrate their understanding of a subject.

ADVENTURE

Our adventure programme starts in Pre-Prep with Forest School. From Years 6 pupils take part in residential trips to places of significance within the UK such as the Peak District and Snowdonia. During these trips they take part in activities like abseiling, canoeing and climbing, but it also a wonderful opportunity to develop lifelong friendships.

As part of their post-exam programme, Year 8 set off on a five-day expedition to Wales for a week of adventure and new experiences. These activities help to build lifelong skills such as independence, teamwork and leadership and, perhaps most importantly, provide the fun which is at the heart of any young person’s experiences.

Each child has their own individual summit, and we encourage them all to aim towards reaching theirs.

The educational benefits are widely reported and include:

  • An improvement in academic achievement
  • Providing a bridge to higher order learning
  • Developing skills and independence in a widening range of environments
  • Making learning more engaging and relevant to young people
  • Developing active citizens and stewards of the environment
  • Nurturing creativity
  • Providing opportunities to take acceptable levels of risk
  • Giving young people responsibility for achieving these outcomes and helping them to learn from their successes and failures
  • Providing support for many different curriculum areas.
