BE THE BEST YOU
ACADEMIC excellence
Repton Prep’s curriculum is varied, stimulating and demanding, but flexible enough to ensure that no child is left behind. Self-motivation, an enquiring mind and an eagerness to learn are all cultivated here, but most importantly our pupils learn how to learn – a lifelong skill.
At Repton Prep we want each child to establish their individual place within the school community and an understanding of transferable skills, which is something that our Head, Mrs Vicky Harding, is passionate about:
“Providing links for pupils between subjects so they don’t see maths, languages, science, humanities, the arts and sport in isolation, but have the ability and tools to join the dots between the skills that they are learning from lesson-to-lesson, and even during their after-school clubs and activities, is vital.
Encouraging children to be curious is the wonderful thing about being an educator. So, during a science lesson talking about how they feel physically when they play sport and then getting outside to re-enact that; taking algebra into the woods; or discovering that many children’s authors, such as Beatrix Potter and Arthur Ransome drew inspiration from the landscape by taking an English lesson next to our lake all make for a much richer educational experience.”
DID YOU KNOW...
“Moving away from Common Entrance and embracing a through-school curriculum has enabled pupils to benefit from an education that is relevant to the 21st century. Our through-school approach allows a seamless transition from Prep to Senior, offering pupils consistency which is key to academic success. We see immediate benefits from adopting a shared teaching philosophy as well as a shared emphasis on the value placed on the balance we encourage between academic, artistic and sporting endeavour. The pupils who continue their academic journey from Repton Prep to Repton join the senior school with confidence, a wealth of relevant skills and knowledge and the capacity to seize every opportunity a Repton education provides.”
- Repton’s Deputy Head Academic, Mr Ashley Currie
THROUGH SCHOOL curriculum
We teach a through-school curriculum that prepares children for their onward academic journey. This involves structured teaching in all the core subjects with formal examination practice introduced from Year 6. Above all our aim is for children to learn to be at ease with academic challenges such as examinations. We prepare them well and show them the benefits of committing themselves to their studies so that they can approach assessments with confidence.
We also understand that learning is about much more than being able to pass an exam and pupils are taught to be enquiring. Lessons are varied and stimulating, involving important ‘soft skills’ such as collaboration, teamwork and lateral thinking.
Non-examined subjects, across the Arts, D&T and sport, play an equally important role at Repton Prep. As well as providing balance in the school day, these subjects broaden our children’s minds and give them access to new concepts. We view them as equally important to the lessons that provide pupils with exam grades as they are vital preparation for life beyond school and help set the groundwork for the skills that 21st century employers seek.
Children learn best when they are thriving in a happy environment. Our pupils love nothing more than ‘having a go’ and in doing so develop their self-motivation, resilience and confidence. They thrive on the opportunities and challenges that ignite a journey of self-discovery allowing them to grow in confidence and develop their full potential. This sometimes means failing and at Repton Prep this is encouraged. Failure is a wonderful opportunity for growth and means that children are pushing their own boundaries in a secure and supportive environment.
