REPTON PREP

What is EYFS?

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a comprehensive framework in the UK that sets standards for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to five years old. It is designed to ensure that young children are given the best possible start in life, promoting school readiness and laying a solid foundation for future learning and development. The EYFS framework includes specific learning and development requirements, covering areas such as communication and language, physical development, and personal, social, and emotional development. By following the EYFS framework, educators and caregivers can support each child's individual needs, helping them to thrive and reach their full potential.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) applies to children from birth to the end of the Reception year, aged 5 years old, and has four overarching principles:

  • Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident, and self-assured
  • Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
  • Children learn and develop well in enabling environments with teaching and support from adults, who respond to their individual interests and needs and help them to build their learning over time. Children benefit from a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers
  • Importance of learning and development. Children develop and learn at different rates

At Repton Prep School, we value the important role that EYFS plays in laying secure foundations for future learning and development. The EYFS framework is seen as preparing for life and learning and not simply preparing for the next stage of education.

It’s hard to fault this purpose-built nursery and Pre-Prep. Light, bright, chockful of art (even the loos are festooned with pretty pictures and wall hangings) and with large outdoor spaces for seamless indoor/outdoor flow and even its own walled garden and paddock to play in.”

EYFS PRIME AREAS OF Learning and Development

There are seven areas of learning and development that shape our Early Years educational programmes. Three are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

The three prime EYFS learning areas are:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The four remaining learning areas of Early Years Foundation Stage are specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied.

The EYFS specific areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive arts and design

All these areas are interconnected and are delivered through a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities. A broad and balanced curriculum ensures that Repton Prep School offers enrichment for all pupils which goes beyond the specific subjects being taught.

BEYOND THE Early Years Classroom

Our extensive grounds afford the children their own safe landscape to explore and learn. We use these incredible facilities, taking lessons within our core curriculum outdoors whenever we are able to.

For younger children this is a daily occurrence – learning to form shapes using sticks in the woods, taking bark rubbings and exploring the textures of the natural world, or the excitement of completing the low ropes course.

Nursery, Reception and Year 1 classes have direct access to outdoor learning gardens from their classrooms equipped with chalkboards, all-weather games and seated areas where they can investigate and experiment in the safety of an age-appropriate space.
